Worldbuilding is a great exercise in creativity and is one of my favourite past times. It’s when you build a fictional world from the ground up, creating a unique fictional universe for your stories to take place. When creating fictional worlds, I get to marry my love of studying different cultural topics and weaving together a story story.
Like many writers, I’ve been making up stories since I was young. Over time most of them have been reworked to become part of a cohesive universe that I call Faerie Dark. Up until this year, I’ve kept it pretty close to my heart, telling only a few friends select stories from it because I was shy. But as I’m learning to be comfortable sharing my work, I wanted to start sharing it on this website and invite others to become a part of the creative process.
One of my most enjoyable experiences on the internet was when in my teens, I started writing fan fiction on the internet. Fan fiction is fiction written by fans of a work, rather than the creator. When I was fourteen, I started writing fan fiction for the anime series Sailor Moon. I practiced my writing daily, learned html, took up drawing, and took a music production class – all inspired by the love of one television show. ♥ The themes I wrote about have remained with me to this day and many of the friends I met continue to inspire me creatively. I participated in a creative community and received a lot of feedback and collaboration experiences that really helped me grow as an artist.
Over time, I’ve incorporated a lot of other favourite works into my creative inscape and I’ve been inspired equally by modern day media as by life, dreams, and myth.
“Faerie Dark” is a fantasy story about a world that’s forgotten what makes it beautiful and where fear has hidden what connects it to the divine. It’s a labour of love that has been shaped by so many sources over the years and so much of my growth as a writer came from working with the ideas of others. I feel that it is only fitting that ‘Faerie Dark’ be released as a free cultural work, which means you are free to study, apply, copy and/or modify it for any purpose. If you enjoy it and would like to support it, please contribute to my projects. Take the ideas and make them your own, pass the stories around, add your own interpretations of characters to the wiki, make up new ones that add a new vision to the world.
I’ll be updating the wiki with articles as I write them, as well as posting stories here on “Crown of Violets”. The stories are also free cultural works that you may use as you like. Faerie Dark is a work in progress, so it will go through many incarnations I’m sure, shaped both by my ideas and the input of others.
I hope you enjoy!
